A New Years Letter to Me

Dear Me,

You have been through journals, posts, played back conversations and treasured moments looking for all the things you have learned this year.  No resolutions for 2011....with the exception of one. Learn from 2010.

And in case you forget...in the moments you are flailing... these are the words to remember:

  • You have the most beautiful, amazing kids in all of the world. They are smart, funny, kind, and compassionate. They are yours....for keeps. You get to love them irrationally, take their side, and tell them how much you adore them. They will not grow up selfish and spoiled. But they will know that there is such a thing as home and that you are it. Sometimes it is overwhelming to give a gift we have never been given ourselves, but you can do it. Everyday. They are worth it.

  • It is okay to love more, deeper, longer. It might sting occasionally.  But your heart was not created for less.

  • Life is fleeting. Even with a year to prepare, the loss of Papa was still felt in an unexpected way. Even when we are ready to release someone, something.... we still feel its absence.

  • A haircut you love, a great bra, and pedicured toes go a long way. Don't leave home without them.

  • Sometimes the best thing we can do after a long hard week following a long season, after a long year is put on a sparkly dress, your favorite least sensible shoes, and get lost in the moment....and let tomorrow worry about itself.
  • Physical beauty can be bought. It can be dressed and groomed. It is cheap. But a beautiful spirit, an attractive soul... that is a gift and has to be cultivated. That reaches further, lasts longer, and outshines the fairest of them all.

  • You need at least one person in your life you can be absolutely real with. Who is completely biased towards you. Who will call you on your crap. Wait patiently when you aren't yourself. And is excited when you find your way back.

  • Bath scrub is awesome. There is healing power in Kiss Me Kate. Especially when it is lime green.

  • Sometimes you have to let things go. Sometimes you have to work through them. Knowing when to do what is the trick.
  • It is not odd to go to a city that you are unfamiliar with by yourself to do something you have always wanted to do. It is brave. And adventurous. You like brave and adventurous people.
  • Get out of your head. Say and do and be.

  • You always hated being the youngest in your circle. Now that everyone is in their thirties (and forties) and you are not, it is suddenly not such a bad thing after all.
  • You can be homesick for a place you have never been.

    • Routine is overrated.

    • People will not like you. There will be people who are quick to call you un-friendly, or un-fun, or  un-well. It is not your fault if they are impatient and don't stick around long enough to see you. You see you. The people who matter see you.

    • Fill holes. Don't wait for an invitation. Do something that is needed. Be something that is missing.

    • All in....not something to be apologetic about.
