Grocery Store Drop Out

I am not a fan of grocery shopping. I don't know why. I want to be one of those women who plans out her menus and makes lists organized by aisle . That woman even goes to the store on a certain day. My husband would be so in love with that woman.

I have tried many systems, even this one where we basically eat tacos every 13th day.

This makes no sense to me. How am I supposed to know what I am going to be in the mood for next Tuesday or on the seventh day of the rotation?  But I can hold it together for a few days...until I look at the menu and see that even though I am craving asparagus and grilled chicken... we are supposed to have spaghetti. A more logically brained person would just make a substitution or add her menu on the next available spot. Not me. I chuck the whole system. Who can make spaghetti when she is craving asparagus?

Here is the other problem. Defrosting. Not my strong suit. When I leave in the morning, I have to find my shoes, my keys, and my favorite bracelet that I have mindlessly deposited around the house. Then I'll have to go back in for my cell phone and maybe a lolly gaggling child. I am certainly not thinking of dinner.

Here is what I do like. I like being spontaneous. I like last-minute dinner invitations and hanging out with someone long enough that it runs into meal time and you just naturally eat together.

I also like feeling European. We have this natural food store just around the corner and I LOVE to stop in for a few fresh things for dinner. I can pretend for a few minutes that we are in an outdoor market in Paris...minus the fluorescent lights, beeping registers, and the fact that we are at one of the busiest intersections in the city. In my head ...none of that matters.

But the reality of it is that I often have to drag four unwilling children in and that interferes with my fantasy. The European Market quickly turns into Jason's Deli and I have no choice but to own my status as a grocery store drop out.

That would be me.

Except yesterday I took four children to Sam's Club. And they were slightly more willing since I bribed them promised to positively reinforce their good behavior with a movie. Then I dropped $250. We have lots of food!

While I was there, I may have solved one of the giant crises that seems to haunt our family. That would be our disappearing silverware. It's a chronic problem our family struggles with everyday. I bought the cure.

Yes 72 spoons and forks for about $15 bucks....amazingly the knives breed so no need for those. I finally found a way to buy them faster than our kids...whatever they do with them.

All is well.

  2. Oh My Gosh you're my new best friend. Called it.

I have the same silverware. My great grandma apparently had the same problem. Until the day she died she lifted spoons from every restaurant she ever set foot in. I assume it's because her kids had used them to dig in the back yard like mine do. Come over for dinner anytime. (and the happy discovery I made this morning, that is actually possible)

We had friends over last night and at 4:00 I still hadn't committed to a menu because I wasn't sure what I was hungry for.
